ThirdGen team presented at three international conferences in summer 2025

ThirdGen team shared their research findings at three major international conferences this summer, showcasing the project’s work to scholars from different disciplines.

Sait Bayrakdar presented the work co-authored with Ayse Guveli and Sebnem Eroglu-Hawksworth at two international conferences: the IMISCOE Conference in Paris and the ISA Forum in Morocco. The study examines the occupational status of women from migrant backgrounds in Europe and the gendered impact of social stratification processes in the labour market. It shows that women with a migrant background in Europe achieve better labour market outcomes than their male counterparts and benefit more from parental education.

Serap Kavas presented her work in collaboration with Ayse Guveli and Sait Bayrakdar at the RC28 Summer Meeting at UCLA, Los Angeles. She presented work on the role of education of siblings, uncles and aunts (wider family effects) on educational outcomes in migrant families in Europe, showing how family resources beyond parental class background shape socio-economic outcomes in the migration context in the third generation.

These presentations, using the 2000 Families Project data, show the potential of the rich dataset and set the scene for future research opportunities.

The ThirdGen team is in the process of tendering the fieldwork for the new study and has started fieldwork preparations.
